Installing
Three steps, about a minute
Android asks a few questions the first time you install an app from outside the Play Store. All of them are normal — here is what to expect.

Download the file
Tap the download button. Chrome will warn you that this type of file can harm your device — that warning appears for every APK. Choose Download anyway.

Allow your browser to install apps
Open the downloaded file. If Android says installs from this source are blocked, tap Settings and turn on Allow from this source. You only do this once.

Install and open
Tap Install. Play Protect may offer to scan the app first — let it. When it finishes, open Libot and sign up.
Updating from an older build? Install straight over it — your account, badges and trip history live on the server, so nothing is lost.

What Libot asks for, and why
Nothing is requested up front. Each one is asked for the first time you use the feature that needs it, and the app keeps working if you say no.
Camera
Runs the AR experiences and scans items when a mission asks you to verify one.
Location
Shows spots near you and gives directions. Stays on in the background only while a trip is being tracked.
Photos
Saves the pictures you take in AR, and lets you pick an existing one for your profile.
Notifications
Mission reminders and trip updates. Turn them off in Settings whenever you like.

Before you install
Is Libot free?
Yes — free to download and free to use. No ads and nothing to buy.
Why isn't it on the Play Store?
Libot is still in beta and is handed out directly as an APK while it is being tested. A Play Store listing is the plan once the build settles down.
Is it safe to install an APK?
An APK is the same file format the Play Store installs — the difference is that you are vouching for the source instead of Google. Download it from this page only, let Play Protect scan it when it offers, and if a checksum is published above, check the file against it.
Is there an iPhone version?
Not yet. The iOS build exists but has no distribution channel outside the App Store, so Android is the only way in for now.
My phone says AR isn't supported.
The AR spots need Google Play Services for AR (ARCore), which only some devices ship with. Everything else — routes, missions, badges, bookmarks — works on any phone running Android 7.0 or newer.
Do I need an internet connection?
Yes. Spots, missions and your progress all come from the Libot server, so mobile data or Wi-Fi is needed while you are out.
Will I lose my progress when I update?
No. Your account, badges, bookmarks and trip history are stored on the server, not on the phone. Install the new APK over the old one and sign back in.
